Check out that cool design.The Habits of Mind are a set of thinking dispositions at the core of social, emotional, and cognitive behaviors. Taylor explored a few different ideas for her pinch pot, then decided to figure out a way to make it resemble a seashell. She embraced the opportunity to learn from mistakes and keep trying, having fun along the way. Taylor is using air dry clay for this project! Using a new or different art material can be tricky at first however,Taylor kept her head up and did her best! She has demonstrated the Studio Habit of Mind: Stretch & Explore. This month’s featured young artist is Taylor Mulligan. Artistic Behaviors, on the other hand, were not developed at Harvard. In Project Zero’s research associate Lois Hetland’s words the Eight Studio Habits of Mind were developed to represent the kind of mind that serious arts instruction is trying to make.’.

In art class Katie is focused and hardworking. She takes on each project with confidence and finds a way to use the media and techniques to express her ideas in a unique and personal way. Katie is consistently using the materials and assignments in art to communicate or express herself to others.

Expression in art may change with your ideas, art media and technique. That means she is able to communicate her ideas, beliefs and feelings through her artwork. Katie has demonstrated the Artist Habit of Mind – EXPRESS in art. Way to go Rosie! Lynnwood Elementary: Katie Tario Katie Taro, Lynnwood Elementary School I am very proud to announce Rosie as Artist of the Month and I hope you will all congratulate her as well. She has not given up even when faced with a difficult task. Rosie has been persistent and resilient while working on her idea for this unit. She has been working on a printmaking project that I think the whole fifth grade will agree is both challenging and exciting. Rosie comes into the art room ready to work. That means she has been learning to embrace problem solving, develop her focus on a task and persistence in her artwork. In art class Rosie has exhibited the Artist Habit of Mind: Engage and Persist. The June featured artist is Rosalei Monaco. Jossalyn brings so much joy to the art room and showed the studio habit of observing when she painted a sky with clouds that she has seen in her real life environment! Jossalyn is always enthusiastic about new art projects and is a role model kindergarten student! Amazing job Joss! The students’ pictures and statements are framed and hung in the schools’ entryways. This is not a contest the Young Artist of the Month accomplishment acknowledges specific learning and critical thinking that happens in the art room, in relation to Studio Habits of Mind.

These eight habits – develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch and explore, and understand art worlds – encourage and enable students to be more mindful during the creative process. Each month, the art teachers from Altamont Elementary, Guilderland Elementary, Lynnwood Elementary and Westmere Elementary highlight students who have demonstrated they are practicing Studio Habits of Mind.
